Old Kirkburton Churchyard

My father in law is a volunteer at his local churchyard, strimming back the undergrowth, and cutting the grass in the Old Churchyard with graves going back to 1675. Quite often, while working away, people would ask him about the whereabouts of a particular gravestone, or he might uncover an old stone where the inscription has nearly been worn away through the passage of time.

He began recording the gravestone inscriptions and their position so he would be able to help people locate their ancestors and loved ones. Then he asked me if I could put his records on-line and I was happy to help. The result is an archive of the new and old Churchyards at Kirkburton in West Yorkshire. These records are constantly used by relatives to trace their ancestors from thousands of miles away, all thanks to the hard work and diligence of John Wakley.

Technically, this is a bespoke database and website using a MySQL database, and some jQuery front-end code to allow us to capture the position and size of each gravestone so it can be mapped. Please have a look at the web site which is at http://stormbox.com/kirkburton/

Alantina Rentals

Alantina Rentals already had their own logos and brochures for their successful Portuguese business providing wonderful rental properties in the Algarve.

This is, perhaps, the most complicated website I have completed, since it is completely bespoke multi-lingual application, and was written in PHP with a mySql database. It has a number of back-end administration screens that capture the rental property details and booking information. The bookings can be seen graphically using the custom calendar widget to show when the property is available each month.

J&S Transfers

Jon and Stella run a very successful airport transfer business from and to Faro airport in Portugal, called J & S Transfers. They asked me to provide a clean and minimal web site that explains the resorts they cover, along with the fares, and a clear link to a booking request form.

This was a particularly difficult brief to implement for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, because it has so many components to it including an E-commerce site, a blog, and a really wide range of services to cover, each of which required their own page template, and careful consideration on how best to leverage the SEO rankings with so many keywords to choose from.

The second reason it was difficult was because it is for my wife’s business – so I knew it had to be correct!

As it turned out, we are really pleased with it. It is running the Inspire theme from Woothemes, along with the mighty Woocommerce plugin, and is using the WordPress CMS.

Bohemian Kids

I had previously used these lovable children as graphics in a pre-school website for Claire, so when she asked me to design a web site to support her Bohemian Beads children’s party business, we wanted to let the kids take centre stage and create a web site that was brightly coloured, and nice and informal.

Behind the scenes, it is using the WordPress CMS, and Canvas theme from Woothemes. Simple plugins allow Claire to add Testimonials, Gallery Photos, and receive booking requests.
